Construction work for the MMSD Pumping Station 18 Force Main project is moving into new areas.  The bulk of the work is finished on much of West Broadway and the finished areas have been repaved and restriped. The freshly-paved areas will be reopened to traffic soon. The traffic control in the intersection of Monona Drive and Broadway will remain the same until pavement is installed east of Monona Drive on Broadway.

Further west on Broadway, at the Yahara River Bridge, our contractor has begun the installation of the 66” steel tunnel casing underneath the Yahara River. The casing is being installed using what is known as an air hammer and the installation will take approximately 2 weeks.  If you pass by this area over the course of the next couple weeks, you may intermittently hear some loud banging and clanging.  That is the air hammer in action. Expect this area of Broadway near the bridge to remain closed for about another 1.5-2 months.

On the other side of Monona Drive (East Broadway), a tunnel has been installed underneath Monona Drive. The contractor is picking up where the tunnel left off and continuing pipeline installation. They are expected to be up to the intersection of East Broadway and Roselawn Avenue by this weekend. In order to keep access to Roselawn open during the day, the contractor will be digging across that intersection at night. That crossing is expected to take about 3 nights and is currently scheduled for the nights of 8/10, 8/11, and 8/12, between the hours of 7pm and 5am.

As many of you have likely already noticed, the traffic control for this project has been extended out to the east along Broadway as far as the intersection of Copps Avenue and Broadway. Right now, on the far east end of this project, the south side of the road is closed. This closure is mainly to allow for the installation of water service improvements and will look very similar to what was done on the south side of West Broadway earlier this year.
